Terms and Conditions
- boodget is free, source-available software that you (or someone you trust) download and run on your own infrastructure. There is no boodget-run service, subscription, or hosting behind it.
- It is provided "as is," with no warranty of any kind — no guarantee it's bug-free, secure by default, accurate, or fit for any particular purpose.
- The source code is licensed under AGPL-3.0 with the Commons Clause — you can freely run, study, modify, and share it (including any changes, which must stay under the same license), but you may not sell it or offer it as a paid/commercial service to others. See Section 3 below.
- Because it's self-hosted, you (the installer/operator) are solely responsible for securing your deployment — access control, HTTPS, backups, keeping it updated, and everything else that comes with running a server that holds financial data.
- boodget is a tracking and calculation tool, not a financial, tax, or legal advisor — this applies especially to the AI Advisor feature, whose output is AI-generated and can be wrong.
- To the maximum extent permitted by law, the maintainers/contributors are not liable for any damages, data loss, or financial decisions arising from use of the software.
1. Acceptance of these terms
By downloading, installing, deploying, or using boodget ("the software"), you agree to these Terms and Conditions. If you do not agree, do not use the software. These terms apply to anyone who runs an instance of boodget (an "operator") as well as anyone who uses an instance run by someone else (a "user").
2. Nature of the software
boodget is source-available, self-hosted personal finance software. It is distributed as source code and as a Docker image, published at github.com/mribeiro/boodget. There is no boodget-operated website, server, or service that hosts your instance for you. Every installation runs entirely on infrastructure chosen and controlled by its operator — a home server, a personal cloud VM, a company's own servers, or anywhere else.
This means the boodget maintainers do not host, manage, monitor, back up, or have access to any instance they did not personally deploy for their own use. They are not a party to how you use your own installation, and cannot see, restore, or intervene in your data.
3. License to use the code
boodget's source code is licensed under the GNU Affero General Public License v3.0 (AGPL-3.0), subject to the "Commons Clause" License Condition — the full, authoritative text is in the LICENSE file at the root of the repository, which controls if it ever differs from this summary. In plain language:
- You may freely download, run, study, and modify the code, for any purpose, including as part of a business's internal tools.
- If you distribute the code or a modified version — including running a modified version as a network-accessible service for others to use — you must make the corresponding source code available to those users under this same license (AGPL-3.0's "network use" copyleft condition). This is what "any change made to the code must also be open source" means in practice.
- The Commons Clause condition adds one restriction on top of the AGPL-3.0: you may not sell boodget, or a modified version of it, or offer it (or a modified version) as a paid or commercial hosted/managed service to third parties. Running your own private instance — even at a for-profit company, for that company's own internal use — is not "selling" and remains permitted; what's restricted is monetizing boodget itself or a fork of it as a product or service offered to others.
- This license is not an OSI-approved "open source" license in the strict sense (OSI's definition requires permitting unrestricted commercial use) — it is more precisely described as "source-available," even though it is colloquially referred to as open source elsewhere on this site.
Nothing in this document narrows the rights the LICENSE file grants you; where the two differ on licensing terms specifically, the LICENSE file controls. If you want to use boodget commercially in a way this license doesn't permit, contact the project via GitHub to discuss a separate commercial license.
4. Provided "as is" — no warranty
The maintainers and contributors make no promise that boodget's calculations, projections, or the AI Advisor's output are accurate, complete, or suitable for any real-world financial decision. Software has bugs; a self-hosted personal finance tool is not an exception.
5. Your responsibility as an operator
If you install and run a boodget instance — for yourself, your household, or others — you are solely responsible for:
- Security: configuring HTTPS/TLS, network access controls, firewalls, a strong
SESSION_SECRET, and keeping the underlying server, dependencies, and the boodget version itself patched and up to date. - Backups: boodget stores everything in a local SQLite database file; if you don't back it up, no one else has a copy, and data loss (disk failure, accidental deletion, a bad upgrade) is unrecoverable through the project.
- Access management: who has an account on your instance, what dossiers they can see, and revoking access when appropriate.
- Any third-party integrations you configure (the Anthropic API for the AI Advisor, a Paperless-ngx server, OIDC/SSO, push notifications) — including any costs, API usage, or data-sharing that results, and compliance with those third parties' own terms.
- Legal and regulatory compliance applicable to you or your organization for storing financial data, including data protection law (e.g. GDPR, CCPA) if you operate an instance on behalf of other people.
The project provides the software; it does not provide hosting, security auditing, compliance guarantees, or operational support for your specific deployment.
6. Not financial, tax, or legal advice
boodget is a tracking, budgeting, and calculation tool. Nothing it displays — capital totals, cycle balances, goal projections, loan amortization, emergency fund targets, or any output of the optional AI Advisor feature — constitutes financial, investment, tax, or legal advice. The AI Advisor specifically generates its analysis using a third-party large language model (Anthropic's Claude), which can be factually wrong, miss context, or give generic guidance that doesn't fit your actual circumstances. Always verify important figures yourself and consult a qualified professional before making financial decisions.
7. Limitation of liability
To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, in no event will the maintainers, contributors, or copyright holders of boodget be liable for any direct, indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or exemplary damages (including, without limitation, loss of data, loss of profits, or financial losses resulting from decisions made using the software) arising out of or in connection with the use, or inability to use, boodget — even if advised of the possibility of such damages. This limitation applies regardless of the legal theory (contract, tort, or otherwise) on which a claim is based.
8. No support obligation
boodget is maintained as a source-available project on a best-effort, volunteer basis. There is no service-level agreement, guaranteed response time, or obligation to fix bugs, answer questions, or continue development. Community contributions, bug reports, and feature requests are welcome via GitHub Issues, but are handled at the maintainers' discretion.
9. Changes to the software and these terms
The software and this document may change over time as the project evolves. Because each instance runs whichever version its operator has deployed, changes to boodget itself only take effect on an instance when that operator upgrades it. Updates to this Terms and Conditions file take effect in the project's repository as of their "Last updated" date; if you operate an instance for others, you're responsible for communicating any material changes that affect them.
10. Termination
Since there is no boodget-operated account or service, there is nothing for the project to "terminate" on its end — you can stop using the software, or an operator can take an instance offline, at any time. Any license rights to the underlying code remain governed by the license referenced in Section 3.
11. Contact
boodget is a source-available project, not a company or legal entity providing a service to you. Questions about the software can be raised via GitHub Issues. If you're a user of an instance run by someone else, direct account- or data-related questions to that instance's operator.
